To create a scheme to reduce HGV accidents where excessive speed was a factor along the A75 in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
Scotland TranServ is the operating company responsible for the management and maintenance of the trunk road network in south west Scotland.
They aim to improve the quality of the country's roads, prioritising road maintenance issues and delivering a programme of improvements as quickly, efficiently and safely as possible.
"The scheme was developed using KeySIGN, KeyPOST and another element used KeyLINES. The software was an intrinsic element of the design as it involved signs, road markings and posts so it was used for the majority of the work."
Vincent Tait, Road Safety Manager
There were a number of challenges faced with this project. The A75 has restricted verge widths so finding suitable locations for the signs was important. It was also paramount to ensure that appropriate locations were found to allow suitable visibility of the signs.
After an extensive research and design process, a number of features were introduced aimed at reducing HGV accidents. New speed signs on passively safe posts were installed, and ribbed edge lines and textured centre lines were added. Due to the success of the HGV scheme, the system was extended to take in all vehicle types, aiming to reduce all accidents involving excessive speed along the A75 route.
KeySIGN, KeyPOST and KeyLINES were intrinsic elements of the design process. Being a road safety unit, a lot of work involves new sign design and the next project involves a major passive safety overhaul of signs at roundabouts, for which the software will be invaluable.
The Highways Awards
Scotland TranServ along with partners Clearview Intelligence, Coeval and Transport Scotland were winners of the Road Safety Scheme award at the 2017 Highways Awards for their A75 speeding related accident project. The judges commented: "An innovative approach identifying the class of vehicle causing issues and specifically targeting that class."
Keysoft Solutions sponsored the Road Safety Scheme of the Year category and were pleased to announce such a worthy winner.
